The major challenge for the city of Lyon is the increased occurrence of extreme rainfall events and the need for better design, operation and modelling of the sewer systems to cope with flooding. In order to improve the measurements and knowledge of rainfall, the Greater Lyon, in collaboration with INSA and DHI tests and evaluates a small X-band radar system. The combination of radar images (Xband and C-band) and rain gauges information will improve the estimates and modelling of discharges and water levels at the small scale of urban subcatchments and will be a key element for the implementation of a real time control system in the future.
